1954 Illustrated Ink Blotter Smokie the Bear with 2 Cub Bears This blotter is 6 inches by 2 ½ inches. It features yellow and brown graphics of Smokie with two small cub bears, holding up their right hands and pledging I Will Be Careful. At the bottom it has the traditional motto, Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires. Put out by the Forrest Service in 1954 over a half century ago. Advertising ink blotters were popular from the 1800’s until the 1960’s when fountain pens were predominantly used, before fast drying ball point pens came around. The ink dried slow, and would stay wet for several minutes, so a “blotter” was used on signatures, etc. to absorb the excess ink. They are absorbent on one side and the other was used for displaying advertising. Like calendars and business cards, they were a favorite “give-a-way” media for advertisers. Most were used and tossed. Survivors with interesting advertising are scarce. Collectors seek out interesting ones like this to frame. Perfect Condition! |
