Gold Medal Flour Ad

Cardwell Grocery Store ~ Norwich, Connecticut

This unused ink blotter has exceptional graphics of a cloth sack of Washburn - Crosby Co. Gold Medal Flour. It is 6 ¼ by 3 ½ inches, color graphics. It was given out buy W.H. Cardwell, Fancy and Staple Groceries, Prompt Service, Norwich, Conn. It also says Phone Connection. This was from when phone systems were just being developed, before phone numbers and you called the local operator and asked to be connected to the Cardwell Grocery.

Advertising ink blotters were popular from the 1800's until the 1950's when fountain pens were predominantly used, before fast drying ball point pens came around. The ink dried slow, and would stay wet for several minutes, so a “blotter” was used on signatures, etc. to absorb the excess ink. They are absorbent on one side and the other was used for displaying advertising. Like matches, calendars and business cards, they were a favorite “give-a-way” media for advertisers. Most were used and tossed. Survivors with interesting advertising like this are scarce. Collectors seek out interesting ones like this to frame. Perfect Condition.
