Hetzler’s Dairy Drive In

Soda Jerk & Car Hop

Folded Paper Hat ~ 1962

This paper hat is dated 1962. It was used by a small Mid-west Ma & Pa Soda Fountain Dairy Parlor Drive In on the famous Woodward Strip near Detroit. These hats were typically worn by the soda jerk or the car hops. They were a part of the 1950’s drive in culture. Our group ran on the Woodward Avenue Strip in the early 1960’s. It Started at 8 Mile Road at a small hamburger Drive in and ended about 15 miles later at at Ted's near Pontiac.

On a Friday or Saturday night we would make 3 or 4 runs down and back on the strip. We would try to “swipe” these hats from the car hop at each of the dozens of soda fountain Drive-Ins along the route. The cool dudes had over a dozen sitting in their back window. Being sold to the highest bidder with no reserve. We pack it securely and mail it to you First Class U.S. Postal.
