Spice Labels ~ Large 1910

Grocer & General Store Display Kegs

These labels were used on small kegs & barrels of spice that the old general store merchant would use to measure out or weigh a customers order. The kegs usually held from 1 to 5 gallons of spice, and the customers would usually want ½ to an ounce. Sometimes it was measured in volume, like a cup, etc. The set includes 8 labels of different spices. There are 2 styles of labels. Three were used on the kegs & barrels, Five were used on smaller drums, tubs or crates. Here is a close up of some of the features. Remember, these are LARGE labels. 8 inches by 6 ½ inches.

All are from John Blaul’s Sons Co. Burlington and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They were a mid 1800’s and early 1900’s regional grocer processor and distributor, who brought in unrefined food items, and groceries in large quantities on barges up the Mississippi River and processed & repackaged them into goods in their own brands of boxes & Kegs & Gunny sacks and distributed them by rail to Ma & Pa grocers and General Stores and sent them Out West, for settlers and railroad towns in the expanding western Territories. The west bound Railheads all had starting points in central Iowa at the Mississippi River back then. Blauls specialized in long lasting items like Coffee Bean Roasting, Tea drying, Spices, Dried Fruits and other items they could process and preserve for the long trek to the remote frontier retailers and ultimately to the isolated Farms and cowboys saddle bags.

Blauls packaged several of their own brands, and also made bulk ground spice for other repackagers and wholesalers like ”Jack Sprat” ~ “Bugle Call” Coffee, “Dining Club Coffee”, and several spice and tea products for other repackagers. This set of 8 labels consists of 3 Keg labels from their bulk plant in Burlington and 5 Labels from both the Burlington and the Cedar Rapids processing and packaging plants.
