1910’s Blaul Sons Grocer Supply

Spice Bottle Labels

Ornate Gold Flake Gilded Ink Gummed Labels

These gummed Spice Jar labels are unused stock left over from 1910. Exceptionally ornate graphics and text, heavily laden with Gilded Ink that contains real Gold Flake content to make it sparkle and look opulent! You can actually feel the texture and thickness difference where the Gold is! The Blaul “BBBB” brand was the top of the line for general stores and grocers west of the Mississippi at the turn of the century. Check out this (roughly actual size) close up of a some labels.

Note the intertwined 4B’s logo surrounded by fresh lush green spice leaves. The red and black lettering and the deep blue signature area make them stand out. It’s all framed out in liberal use of heavily laden gold gilded ink, all the way around. A process that more or less stopped in the 1920’s. The labels are all die cut fancy shaped.

John Blaul’s Sons Co. Burlington and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. was a mid 1800’s and early 1900’s regional grocery distributor, who brought in unrefined food items, and groceries in large quantities on barges up the Mississippi River and processed & repackaged them into goods in their own brands of boxes and distributed them by rail to Ma & Pa grocers and General Stores and sent them Out West, for settlers and railroad towns in the expanding western Territories. The west bound Railheads all had starting points in central Iowa at the Mississippi River back then. Blauls specialized in long lasting items like Coffee Roasting, Tea drying, Spices, Dried Fruits and other items they could process and preserve for the long trek to the remote frontier retailers and ultimately to the isolated Farms, ranches and cowboys saddle bags.

This assortment includes 2 neck (Bottle Neck) bands, One with the Blaul 4B logo and the other one says, “Ground Pepper”. Also included are 8 die cut, shield shaped labels, 3 different sizes.; 4 oz. “Ground Black Pepper”, 2 ½ oz. “Whole Mixed Spice”, 3 Oz. “Celery Salt”, A smaller 3 oz. “Celery Salt”, A 3 oz. “Whole Mixed Spice”, A large label, “3 Lbs of Whole Nutmegs,” A medium sized label of “One Dozen Whole Nutmegs”, and a 1 ½ ounce “Onion Seasoning”.
