Unusual Ice Cream Box One Quart Brick Akenhead's ~ 1959 Flavor Selector This unusual Ice Cream box was one of the first of the pre-packed, store sold ice cream containers. Up until the late 1950's, you would buy Ice Cream at a Dairy Bar. Grocery stores didn't carry it. It would be hand packed into trapezoid shaped containers to take home. It came in two flavors, Vanilla and Chocolate. Sometimes in the spring you could get Strawberry Then in the late 1950's with advancements in freezing technology came the idea of factory packed ice cream in consumer containers that could be sold from a grocery Store freezer. This was one of the first. Called Brick Ice Cream it is the size and shape of a brick. 6 ¾ inches by 2 ¾ inches by 3 ½ inches. It was one quart liquid. Flavor experimentation was just coming out at the same time. Now you had more than just 3 flavors to choose from. You had Seven! This attractive box is made from waxed cardboard, and has interesting graphic arrangement. Red on yellow, They called it Brick Ice Cream. It highlights that they had factories in Palestine and Sebring, Ohio. It's a must for Ice cream collectors, because it only lasted a year or so before they became obsolete. They became more sophisticated with their packaging and made Half Gallons and Gallon Waxed cardboard containers like some dairies still use today. ![]() Illinois residents pay sales tax.
