One Quart Ice Cream Container

Akenhead's Ice Cream

Tapered Cardboard Dairy Carton ~ 10¢ Size

This is what a Dime would buy in the mid 1950's. Not to be confused with his little brother the "Pint" or 5¢ size. This 1 Quart carton is a slightly tapered trapezoid shape. It stands 5 ¼ inches tall, is 3 ½ inches wide at the bottom and 4 ¼ inches wide at the top. It is printed in yellow and red. It says, "Made by Akenhead's Ice Cream ~ One Quart liquid ~ Factories at East Palestine and Sebring , Ohio." The words Ice Cream are in a fold back banner with a crisscross checkerboard background. The side says, "One Quart Liquid" ~ "Serve It and You Please All". It has a fold-over, tab tuck top. The bottom says, "Bloomer Brothers Company, Newark ~ New York ~ Design No.603 Copyrighted."

This Dairy operation was typical of the 1950's Ice Cream business. The industry was dominated by small, regional family owned Dairy's. If you wanted to take some ice cream home, it wasn't pre-packaged in a box. They would hand pack it into a tapered carton with a fold-over lid to order. Directly from their freezer. One Pint and one Quart were the typical sizes.
