This set of four thick cardboard signs was used for the Horse delivery ice wagons Ice Man. They came in 5 Lb., 10 Lb., 20 Lb., and 50 Lb. blocks. If you wanted the standard 50 Pound Block, you would put the 50 Lb. sign in your front window. If you wanted 30 pounds, you would put both the 20 and 10 pound signs in your window. The ice man would let himself in and put the ice blocks directly into the ice compartment of your refrigerator! This was before there was electric refrigeration. They used a tin lined, insulated oak cabinet style refrigerator with an ice compartment at the top and a drip pan and small hose to carry the water drips away as the ice melted. A standard 50 pound block would usually last a day, longer if you didn't constantly open the door. You put the sign in the window at night before you go to bed, because the Ice Man usually ran his route early in the morning. The ice block would be in your refrigerator before you got up. Old timers will remember the clop, clop, clop of the horses pulling the wagon down the street as a sign that morning was near. This complete set has all 4 signs in the traditional ice sign colors of yellow and black. Each sign is 7 by 7 inches square and printed on thick cardboard. If you have an old oak refrigerator, you need these signs. Looks great framed and near a modern refrigerator too! Ideal for the home bar wall.
