Celluloid and Brass Plated Tin

Toy Watch

Store Display Card ~ 1950’s Japan

This Japan Toy Watch has a highly detailed watch face. It is made from old beer cans turned inside out. A favorite materiel for resource strapped Japan after the war. It’s hands move with the knob. It is 1 ¼ inches in diameter and 5 inches long including the solid tin strap. The ornate embossed tin litho strap is all metal. The watch has a pressed back and a clear celluloid face crystal.

The Store Card actually uses a small amount of gilded ink, uncommon for Japanese printing. It says, Seventeen Jewels Toy Watch. It is a higher quality than most Japanese toy watches. The dime store display card is 7 ½ inches by 2 ¼ inches. This is a very nice piece for the Japan 1950’s collectors. This item is typical of stuff in the large Dime Store merchandise finds we made.
