Cherub ~ Gold Gilded Ink ~ Raisins Box

1890's Currant Box ~ Ornate

John Blaul's Sons Co. ~ Burlington and Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Currants are similar to raisins. They were a favorite for western settlers, trappers, hunters, etc. because they had a long shelf life. This box is an exceptional example of century old vintage food packaging. It is ornately decorated with bunches of grapes growing on a vine, with a distinctive cherub holding up a bursting bunch of grapes. Two color blue and gold gilded ink! The printer used gold gilded ink generously on many of the phenomenal ornate details. The gilded ink glistens with its glimmering real gold flake content! The qualities and character are classic turn-of-the-century, featuring graphics using gilded ink with real gold flake content to make it sparkle.

This distinctive box is from the 1890's's Food Processor, Coffee Roaster and Grocer Wholesaler, John Blaul's Sons Co. Burlington and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They were an 1800's and early 1900's regional grocery distributor, who purchased food and provisions in large quantities, shipped them in on barges on the Mississippi River and processed and packaged goods in their own brand boxes and distributed them by rail to Ma & Pa grocers and General Stores and sent them Out West, for settlers and railroad towns in the expanding frontier. This box is 6 inches tall, and held 15 ounces of imported, cleaned, currants. A seldom seen, genuine century old, quality box with exquisite graphics. Unused, Perfect Condition.
