Woodward Avenue ~ Detroit Strip

Car Hop Hat ~ 1963

Drive-In Restaurant

Here's a relic from the heydays of Cruisin' the Strip. Woodward Avenue is the main drag going north out of Detroit. Back in the late 1950's and through the 1960's, weekend summer nights meant cruising the strip, the section of Woodward Avenue between Pontiac and Detroit was about 12 miles of drive ins, A&W, Big Boy, etc. Back then, drive ins were mostly Mom & Pop operations.

The North end of the Strip, near Pontiac, was anchored by a drive-in called Ted's Trailer, a hot dog stand that grew into the premier Drive-In. At the South end, near Detroit's city limits was a hamburger stand drive-in called Dari Burger. Cruisers would start at either Ted's or Dari Burger and cruise the strip, having a malt and burger at the other end, where you turn around and do it again. Usually 2 or 3 round trips a night.

Car hops were the girls that would come out and take your order and bring you your food, while you stayed with your car. This paper hat was worn by the car hops at the Dari Burger.
