Mechanical Desk Calendar

 Pencil Sharpener

1950's Novelty ~ Original Box

This plastic Hong Kong import is typical of the imported novelties and toys that flooded the Dime stores in the 1950's. This is a slick little desk item that has dials that you move to change the days, month, etc. The base contains a built in pencil sharpener.

Pencils were small sticks of wood with a core of a graphite and carbon composition. The earlier ones used a core of lead. They were used to write on paper, much as we use a pen or mechanical pencil today. As they wore, the point of the core would become dull. One then merely inserted it into the hole in the base of this device, twirl it a little bit with your fingers, and a sharp metal blade would reshape the end of the pencil making it sharp again! This one is about 2 inches tall, two tone plastic. It comes in it's original box! All is in Perfect Condition. We pack it securely and send it First Class U.S. Postal, for $2.85.
