1954 Ink Blotter

Prevent Forest Fires

Rabbits Graphics in a Fire

This ink blotter is 6 inches by 3 ¼ inches. It features a striking illustration of a rabbit family in a forest fire, with the mother rabbit instructing two young ones what to do. Fire is behind them and smoke is wafting around them. The top says, Fires Prevent Forests in large letters and at the bottom it says Wisconsin Conservation Department. Excellent example of 1950’s advertising, and a unique ink blotter. Perfect Condition!

Advertising ink blotters were popular from the 1800’s until the 1960’s when fountain pens were predominantly used, before fast drying ball point pens came around. The ink dried slow, and would stay wet for several minutes, so a “blotter” was used on signatures, etc. to absorb the excess ink. They are absorbent on one side and the other was used for displaying advertising. Like calendars and business cards, they were a favorite “give-a-way” media for advertisers. Most were used and tossed. Survivors with interesting advertising are scarce. Collectors seek out interesting ones like this to frame.
