John Deere Historic Blacksmith Shop Illinois

This is a drawing of the replica of the original Blacksmith shop that John Deere established and located at the John Deere Historic Site in Grand Detour, Illinois. The site has been designated a Registered National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service, and a Historic Landmark of Agricultural Engineering by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers.

It was here that John Deere formed his first plow out of an old broken sawmill blade. He discovered that it’s smooth, hardened surface didn’t stick to the deep prairie soils of the Midwest like the cast iron plows did. This is where it all started!
